The Seven Classes: A to G for the VFR Pilot
What each airspace class demands before a VFR flight may enter: clearance, radio contact, or nothing at all.

Why it matters
The class letter is a contract. It tells you, before you call anyone, whether you may enter at all, whether you need a clearance or merely contact, and it tells ATC what service they owe the traffic inside. Get the contract wrong in the direction of optimism — entering Class C without a clearance, say — and you have violated an airspace requirement even if nothing came close to you.
Canada uses the ICAO ladder from A down to G. For a VFR pilot the ladder has three rungs that matter: forbidden, permission first, and come on in.
The ladder, from the top
Class A — all controlled high level airspace in the south, from 18,000 feet ASL to FL 600. IFR only: VFR flight is not permitted at all (CAR 601.06 offers no VFR path). You will meet Class A on the exam, not in a Cessna 172.
Class B — controlled low level airspace above 12,500 feet ASL (or the minimum en-route IFR altitude, whichever is higher) up to but not including 18,000 feet. VFR flight is permitted but becomes controlled VFR (CVFR): you need a clearance and you fly it like an IFR flight, following ATC instructions throughout.
Class C — busy terminal airspace and control zones (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and the like). A VFR flight must receive an ATC clearance before entering (CAR 601.08). Radio, and in practice a transponder, are part of the deal.
Class D — moderately busy control zones and terminal areas. A VFR flight must establish two-way radio contact with ATC before entering (CAR 601.09) — contact, not clearance. If the tower answers "Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie, standby", you have established contact and may continue unless told otherwise; in Class C, silence or "standby" is not a clearance and you stay out.
Class E — controlled airspace without an entry requirement for VFR: low level airways, control area extensions, transition areas, and control zones at quieter aerodromes. No clearance and no radio contact are required to enter; what makes it "controlled" for you is the controlled-airspace weather minima (3 miles, 500/1 mile) and the fact that IFR traffic receives ATC service there.
Class F — special use airspace, restricted (CYR) or advisory (CYA), which the next unit covers.
Class G — everything left over: uncontrolled airspace. No clearances exist; the uncontrolled minima apply.
C and D degrade when the tower closes
Both Class C and Class D airspace become Class E when the controlling ATC unit is not in operation (CAR 601.08(3), 601.09(3)). A control zone that is Class D from 0700 to 2300 is Class E at 0300 — the entry requirement evaporates with the tower, though the control zone itself (and its weather minima and reporting procedures) remains.
No radio? There is a daytime path
A NORDO aircraft — no radio — may still enter Class C or D during daylight in VMC if the pilot obtains an authorization from ATC before entering (CAR 601.08(2), 601.09(2)), typically arranged by telephone before the flight. At night, or without the prior authorization, the airspace is closed to it.

Before a VFR aircraft may enter Class C airspace, the pilot must:
- receive a clearance to enter from ATC.
- establish two-way radio contact with ATC.
- file a flight plan.
- receive a Special VFR authorization.
Approaching Class D airspace, you call the tower and the controller replies with your call sign and "standby". You may:
- enter, because two-way radio contact has been established.
- not enter until you receive a clearance.
- not enter until you receive a discrete transponder code.
- enter only if you are in contact with a Flight Service Station.
